Meet Betina and Murter

Places and attractions on the island of Murter

On the island of Murter there are 4 typical Dalmatian towns with narrow streets, medieval stone buildings and each town is special and definitely worth a visit. An evening walk around the city or the promenade is a special experience in itself. But if you want to explore the island and all its hidden romantic corners or enjoy the amazing views all the way to the Kornati in the direction of the sea and Velebit to the mainland, then you must explore it by bike. Especially in the time before and after the main season, cycling is considered by many to be the best way to explore the island. You can ride it on the road with a road bike and in some places also on well-maintained bike paths, but the best viewpoints and varied terrains will be most easily experienced by mountain bike. Especially lovers of gravel and wild trails will get their money's worth.

Murter

Murter is the largest and oldest settlement on the island of Murter, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge in Tisno over the Murter Channel. During the season (from 15 May to 15 September), the bridge is raised twice a day for half an hour: at 9.00 and 17.00. The island of Murter is said to be "the island of all islands", as the inhabitants of Murter own almost all Kornati and neighboring islands.
As early as the 1st century, it was inhabited by the Romans when they founded the city of Collentum and later used it as a holiday destination for legionnaires. Today, the remains of the city of Collentum are mostly under the sea. Murter has been called so since 1715. It was previously known as Veliko Selo and Srimac. For a long time, the name Murter was considered to be associated with death, but it was probably named after a carved stone trough that is part of an olive mill and was called - mortarium. This testifies to the important tradition of olive growing on this island. The marina in Murter has 370 berths and is a real nautical center and an excellent starting point for sea voyages. Above all, it serves as an excellent starting point for destinations on the Kornati islands. The highest point of Murter is at 125 m above sea level.
